The stick insect… what a fascinating animal! Very  vulnerable because it is situated at the bottom of the food chain, but it has an incredible power : to merge in its environment by imitating in the perfection the twigs, not only by imitating their forms but also their colors! This camouflage does not stop there because its capacities of imitation allow it to rock in the smaller gust of wind such a stem shaken by the wind. It does the same to move, it’s a great show. It is very difficult to locate it but once in the objective, you have all the time to observe it. It can remain totally still for hours! Three species are counted in France (the Gallic stick insect from the south of France to the coast of Aquitaine and Brittany, the Spanish stick insect and the stick insect of Rossi in the South of France), against several thousand species in the world, but it is amply enough. Concerning the Atlantic coast, I was able to notice that the Gallic stick insect liked strawberry plants. If you have some strawberry plants in your garden… do not hesitate to look for them, particularly in June.
